Building a Culture of Vocation in Your Parish
Every parish has the ability to nurture a culture where vocations can grow and flourish. As Sister Colleen Gibson, S.S.J. reflects, vocation awareness doesn’t happen by accident—it is cultivated through intentional practices that help individuals recognize and respond to God’s call.
Here are seven practical ways your parish can foster a vibrant culture of vocation:
1. Pray for vocations at Mass.
Make prayer for vocations a regular part of your liturgy. When the community consistently lifts up this intention, it reminds everyone that discerning God’s call is a shared responsibility.
2. Invite religious to share their stories.
Personal witness is powerful. Invite sisters, brothers, and priests to speak about their vocation journeys—how they heard God’s call and responded to it.
3. Host a vocation fair.
Bring together different religious communities and diocesan representatives so parishioners can learn about the many paths of service within the Church.
4. Observe National Vocation Awareness Week.
Set aside time each year to highlight vocations through prayer, education, and community events that encourage discernment.
5. Celebrate vocational milestones.
Recognize the beauty of all vocations by honoring wedding anniversaries, priestly ordinations, and religious profession anniversaries within your parish.
6. Share vocation stories in your bulletin.
Use your parish bulletin or website to regularly feature stories, reflections, and resources related to vocation discernment.
7. Create ongoing opportunities for engagement.
A culture of vocation is not built in a single event—it grows through consistent encouragement, relationships, and a community that values every person’s call.
By incorporating even a few of these practices, your parish can become a place where individuals feel supported in discovering their vocation. When a community embraces this mission together, it helps plant the seeds for future generations to hear and answer God’s call.
