Steps to Becoming a Sister
Discernment
In discernment, you explore the pull on your heart toward religious life. We direct you in prayer and reflection. You ask questions and take part in our “Come & See” weekends to see Benedictine life in action at Monastery Immaculate Conception.
If you feel drawn here, and everyone feels that there might be a good fit, you can apply to become an “Affiliate.” You get to acquaint yourself more with our life of prayer, our community and our work by spending time with our sisters. This stage can last up to two years.
Initial Formation
This is the 3-step process by which you start to become a Benedictine Sister of Monastery Immaculate Conception. At each phase, you and our community together discern your call and your capacity to live the monastic life.
1
Postulancy
For up to a year, you live with our community and take part in daily prayer, life and ministries as you continue school or work.
2
Novitiate
You deepen your own spiritual walk and your knowledge of life here, in a year of reflection, prayer, community activities and study of the Rule of St. Benedict and Benedictine tradition. Outside activities are more limited.
3
First Monastic Profession
You commit yourself to live Benedictine life more fully and deepen your understanding of it for three to six years. You study and reflect while working in an assigned ministry.
Perpetual Monastic Profession
Our community receives you. You profess stability, fidelity to the monastic way of life and obedience to the Rule of St. Benedict and the traditions of our community. You take part in all aspects of our monastic life.
