“Sister Mary Flip” Children’s Book Inspired by Sister Mary Philip Berger.

A delightful new children’s book inspired by one of our own Benedictine sisters is bringing smiles to readers of all ages.

Sister Mary Flip’s First Day, written by Erica Futa (pen name E. Berger), tells the story of a kind, clumsy young nun who may stumble and fall—but always gets back up with grace, humor, and heart. The story is inspired by Erica’s aunt, Sister Mary Philip Berger, and by the joyful spirit of the Sisters of St. Benedict at Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana.

“As a child, I grew up visiting the monastery to spend time with my aunt, Sister Mary Philip Berger,” Erica shares. “I enjoyed the beautiful buildings and grounds of Monastery Immaculate Conception.”

As a first-time children’s author, Erica hopes the book reflects “the spirit, joy and perseverance so deeply rooted in this community.”

Meet the Real Sister Mary Philip Berger

Sister Mary Philip Berger, a native of South Bend, Indiana, entered Monastery Immaculate Conception in September 1961 and made her Perpetual Profession on June 13, 1968.

Following her studies at St. Benedict College, Mount St. Scholastica, and the University of Notre Dame, she devoted decades to Catholic education and ministry. She taught at St. Mary’s School in Washington, Indiana; St. Ferdinand High School; Academy Immaculate Conception (later Marian Heights Academy) in Ferdinand for 33 years; and Brescia University. She later served in ESL ministry, volunteered with Mission Advancement, and currently serves the monastery through the Prayer Ministry.

More Adventures to Come

Erica plans to continue the series with additional adventures featuring Sister Mary Flip. She hopes the books will introduce more families to the Sisters of St. Benedict while sharing timeless lessons of kindness, resilience, and joy. A portion of the proceeds from book sales benefits the monastery.
