O Antiphons

Starting on December 17and through December 24, we sing the “O Antiphons” before the Magnificat at evening prayer.  We have a different sister sing this antiphon to make it a little more special. 

I really like the description from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.  They are “magnificent theology that uses ancient biblical imagery drawn from the messianic hopes of the Old Testament to proclaim the coming of Christ as the fulfillment not only of Old Testament hopes, but of present ones.” 

It is our tradition that the Prioress is the one who intones the “O Antiphon” on December 24 which is “O Emmanuel.”  Ever since joining the community, I look forward to this week each year.
