In Memoriam: Sister Mary Dominic Frederick

Sister Mary Dominic Frederick, 90, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana, died on Tuesday, August 18, at the monastery in Ferdinand, Indiana.

Sister Mary Dominic (Betty) was born on July 14, 1930, in Jeffersonville, IN. She was the oldest of three daughters of Dominic Aloysius and Eva (Kamer) Frederick. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1949 and made her profession of monastic vows in 1951.

She is survived by a sister, Jeane Kathryn Losch, and nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents, Dominic Aloysius and Eva (Kamer) Frederick, sister August Marie Lynch and her husband, Thomas.

Sister Mary Dominic attended St. Benedict College in Ferdinand, receiving her bachelor’s in Education, and obtained a master’s degree in English from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She worked as a teacher throughout Southern Indiana at St. Theresa School in Evansville, St. Peter and St. Paul in Haubstadt, St. Ferdinand in Ferdinand, and Mater Dei High School in Evansville. Sister Mary Dominic was a teacher and principal at the Academy Immaculate Conception and Marian Heights Academy in Ferdinand for nearly 25 years. She also served in community administration as a council member, was an exchange teacher for Marymount School in Surrey, England, and served as the archivist, and in prayer ministry at the monastery.

Because of COVID-19 restrictions, visitation and funeral liturgies for the monastic community and family will be private.  A limited public visitation for friends will be held on Friday, August 21, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m., and Saturday, August 22, from 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. This public visitation will take place in the Alumnae Center of the monastery, not in the church.

Becher Funeral Home in Ferdinand will oversee the arrangements.
