Immaculate Conception of Mary

On December 8, we celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary. This day at the beginning of Advent points to the grace and humility of Mary.

Growing up, I was always confused why we celebrate this Holy Day. I thought it was celebrating when the Angel Gabriel came to Mary, but it is really about Mary’s conception without sin.

This Holy Day was started by Pope Pius IX in 1854 to show the grace of God that Mary was preserved from sin. The Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the United States and our Monastery. This day helps us to have an example of what God can do and what we can do, if like Mary we put ourselves in God’s hands and at God’s service. We are called to fulfill God’s will. Mary is a great example of this with her total yes to being the Mother of God.
