In Memoriam: Sister Marilyn Market

Sister Marilyn Market, 95, of Monastery Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand, Indiana, died on Wednesday, November 27, at the monastery.

Sister Marilyn (Evelyn) was born on January 24, 1924, in Evansville, IN. She was the youngest of eight children of John and Otillia Marie (Freppon) Market. She entered the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand in 1941 and made her profession of monastic vows in 1943.  

She is survived by two nephews, Dan Poett from Evansville, IN, Joe (Mary Jo) from Bethany Beach, DE; one niece, Mary (Richard) Cousins from Oley, PA, and one sister-in-law, Evelyn (Dillinger) Market from Springfield, VA. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Melvin and wife Frieda (Temme), brother Welborn and wife Eunice (Henderson), and brother Raymond; sisters Sister Vivian (Mary Louise), Sister Edna (Beatrice), Rosalia (Sally) Windels and her husband Russell, and Viola Mae (Katie) Dewig and her husband Norman. 

Sister Marilyn attended Academy Immaculate Conception and St. Benedict College in Ferdinand, studying education. She worked as a teacher in Indianapolis and throughout Southern Indiana at Christ the King, St. Benedict, Tell City, Northeast Dubois, Vincennes, North Spencer, Southwest Dubois, Barr Reeve, St. Phillip and St. Peter (Barr Reeve). She also served as a missionary in Guatemala, was a private tutor, and engaged in supportive services and prayer ministry at the monastery.

Visitation will be at the monastery on Sunday, December 1, from 3:00 to 6:45 p.m. EDT, and on Monday, December 2, from 2:00 – 3:45 p.m. A vigil service will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. The funeral Mass, followed with burial in the monastery cemetery, will be on Monday at 4:00 p.m. in the monastery church.
