Reiki, God’s Wisdom, is an ancient healing art used to foster feelings of well-being and relaxation in oneself and others. Learn the history of Reiki and experience the nature of this prayer-filled form of healing energy. Participants will practice Reiki techniques. |
Sister Anita Louise Lowe, OSB, has practiced the art of using energy for healing since 1995. She is a trained Reiki master/teacher and utilizes a variety of methods, including quantum healing, with individuals. |

Topic: Inner Peace: Staying Sane Amidst Turmoil
St. Benedict described a way of life that was rooted in reality with a constant focus on seeking God. Explore the wisdom of the Rule of Benedict and learn how to put on the mindset of moderation, balance, and peace.
Sister Barbara Lynn Schmitz, OSB, is pastoral associate/administrator of St. Mary Parish in Evansville, Indiana. She has a master’s degree in business administration from Notre Dame, Indiana, and a certification in pastoral ministry. She serves on the Monastic Council for the Sisters of St. Benedict of Ferdinand and on the Christian Formation/RCIA team at St. Mary’s.

Healthier Life Choices Series
Topic: Wellness and Well-Being
Come and enjoy a morning of learning and practicing a variety of methods and tools that promote wellness of body, mind, and spirit. Discover easy ways to healthy eating, creative exercise, and productive leisure.
Sister Mary Lee Hillenbrand, OSB, has ministered in radiology technology, occupational therapy, and caregiving to the elderly. She is experienced in organic gardening and raising herbs and is a promoter of eco-friendly living. She is also a certified Reiki master. Sister Kate Willegal, OSB, RN, has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Southern Indiana, Evansville. She is currently wellness coordinator and director of the Sisters of St. Benedict Health Services and post-surgical staff nurse at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana.

Benedictine Perspectives Series
Topic: Staying Grounded in the Midst of Change
In this world of rapid change, we experience many endings and new beginnings in our lives. New beginnings may be as simple as the start of a new day, or may involve more significant transitions. Through Scripture and the Rule of St. Benedict, discover creative ways to stay grounded in the midst of change — in the midst of letting go and beginning anew.
Sister Jane Will, OSB, is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice. She is also a spiritual director and is trained in religious formation. She has facilitated many groups and individuals dealing with change and transition.

Healthier Life Choices Series
Topic: Praying with Movement and Dance
At times, people are drawn to stillness and silence at prayer; at other times, they may feel called to an active response in expressing their emotions. This program will explore ways to express emotion in prayer through movement, music, and gesture. Using movement at private prayer will be the main emphasis, and aspects of liturgical dance as a preparation for prayer will be explored.
Theresa Tremmel has extensive background and experience in ballet. She majored in ballet at United States International University in La Jolla, California, and danced with the San Diego Ballet Company. She also worked with and studied ritual liturgy in prayer. She currently works as a parish liturgist and music director in Indianapolis.

Topic: Reconnecting the Mind and Heart
Many of us know intuitively that true wisdom originates from the heart. Science helps us understand the powerful relationship between our hearts and minds. Explore this topic and learn simple tools to connect the mind and heart so you can improve mental clarity and capacity, strengthen communication skills and relationships, improve your health and overall sense of well-being, and enjoy the spiritual benefits of mind and heart working in harmony. Music, humor, and HeartMath® computer software will add a “fun” factor to this program.
Mary Beth Davis, owner of Holistic Health Resources, LLC, in Evansville, works as a holistic health and wellness specialist and consultant. A nurse for over 30 years, she has educated communities and health care providers in the benefits of combining conventional medicine and complementary methods of healing. She is a licensed one-on-one HeartMath® provider.

Benedictine Perspectives Series
Topic: Be Salt! Be Light! Be Fully Alive!
St. Benedict tells us that our ways will be “different from the world’s ways” and that we should “prefer nothing whatever to Christ’s love and way of loving.” Discover in Christ’s Sermon on the Mount how being “salt” and “light” and “fully alive” can change the world around us and make us truly Christian.
Sister Karen Joseph, OSB, has served in leadership roles in her Benedictine community for many years and has also been involved in committees on the international level within the Benedictine order. She has given many retreats and workshops in Benedictine spirituality throughout North America and is currently working in the Spirituality Ministry of the Ferdinand Benedictines.

Healthier Life Choices Series
Topic: Introduction to Celtic Spirituality: Reflections and Rituals
This will be a morning for greeting, honoring, and blessing all of creation — rituals based on ancient Celtic spirituality. Celtic spirituality is often grounded in prayer from the environment of creation. Recently, many people have begun a spiritual journey of discovering their heritage in Celtic spirituality. We will explore some of the areas of that spirituality that have been revived in the last several years.
Theresa O’Bryan is a spiritual director and often presents retreats and reflection days. She has served as liturgy director for parishes in the Indianapolis and Evansville dioceses. She has a bachelor’s degree in pastoral theology.

Topic: Finding God in the Midst of Illness and Suffering
When I am peaceful and joyful and healthy, I am blessed, and God is with me. Why, then, would St. Benedict tell us to keep death daily before our eyes? Is it possible that when I am ill, I am also blessed and God is with me?
Sister Jennifer Miller, OSB, serves as chaplain with the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice in Evansville, Indiana. She has also served as pastoral associate for many years and in education and campus and youth ministry.

Step Three: “Made a decision to turn my will and my life over to the care of God.” By means of conferences, reflection, and discussion, we will explore how Step Three leads us to spiritual transformation — to becoming more the person God wants us to be. |
Sister Mary Claude Croteau, OSB, ministered in drug/alcohol hospital-based programs for 13 years. She has a master’s degree in addiction counseling and is very familiar with AA literature and with the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. She currently does spiritual direction.

Topic: Church History for the Ordinary Person
Where did we ever get the idea that the Church was “unchanging”? Why did we build altars against walls in our churches? How did we have three popes at one time? Learn about and reflect on some key events that have impacted Church development.
Sister Donna Marie Herr, OSB, has taught Church history and given presentations on it for the past 10 years. She holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Dayton, Ohio, and a master’s in theological studies from Saint Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Indiana.

God is present to us in every moment of every day. But how are we present to God? Learn to listen to God in the daily activities and circumstances of your life. This listening is a process of entering into relationship with all of life.
Sister Patricia Ann McGuire, OSB, is currently pastoral associate at St. Benedict Cathedral Parish in Evansville, Indiana. She has a degree in Christian spirituality and certification in spiritual direction and retreat work from Creighton University in Nebraska.

Intensive Centering Prayer Retreat |
June 13-20, 2009 |
6:30 p.m. check-in time. Retreat runs from 7 p.m. Saturday to the following Friday morning. (Program held at Kordes Center) |
The Centering Prayer Retreat includes conferences to renew the method of Centering Prayer and a moderate amount of Centering Prayer in common.
The Intensive Centering Prayer Retreat provides an opportunity to be immersed in the practice of Centering Prayer as taught by Contemplative Outreach. The Intensive features Parts I, II, III of the “Spiritual Journey” videotape series by Father Thomas Keating. Prior Centering Prayer Retreat experience is required. |
Sister Kathy Bilskie, OSB, and Sister Maria Tasto, OSB, are certified presenters of Centering Prayer and have facilitated many Centering Prayer retreats and programs. They are both spiritual directors.
